1. rate The charge for transporting freight. Can be a flat rate, i.e., $500.00, or a rate per mile, i.e., $1.25.

2. rating: Determination of the correct legal rate for a shipment.

3. receivables: Money which is owed to a company by customers who have bought goods and/or services on credit. It is a current asset that will repeatedly turn into cash as customers pay their bills. Also known as accounts receivable.

4. recourse: The right to seek payment on a discounted note from the payee if the maker defaults.

5. retained earnings: The portion of a corporation's owners' equity that has been earned from profitable operations and not distributed to stockholders.

6. return on assets (ROA): Indicator of profitability. Determined by dividing net income for the past 12 months by total average assets. Result is shown as a percentage. ROA can be decomposed into return on sales (net income/sales) multiplied by asset utilization (sales/assets).

7. return on equity (ROE): Indicator of profitability. Determined by dividing net income for the past 12 months by common stockholder equity (adjusted for stock splits). Result is shown as a percentage. Investors use ROE as a measure of how a company is using its money. ROE may be decomposed into return on assets (ROA) multiplied by financial leverage (total assets/total equity).

8. return on investment (ROI): A measure of operating performance and efficiency in utilizing assets computed in its simplest form by dividing net income by average total assets.

9. revenue: (1) Moneys paid to carriers as compensation for the movement of freight; (2) Increases in a company's resources from the sale of goods or services.

10. revocable letter of credit: Assurance of funds issued by a bank that can be canceled at any time without prior notification to the beneficiary.
